Books on Tape – Hands Free Imagination
Do you miss the days when you could curl up on the couch with a good book and just get lost in your imagination for a few hours? When children are young, it seems like they have endless imagination, and books are a great way to perfect their reading skills along with a healthy sense of adventure. As we get older, personal and professional obligations can often rob us of the free time we would normally use to read a book. One of the creative ways that people are finding to work literature back into their lives is by using books on tape.
IN case you’ve never really experienced books on tape before, you should know that they are special audio recordings of popular works of fiction and nonfiction. Because you listen to someone (usually the author) read the book instead of having to read it yourself, it’s often a much richer experience, because your imagination is free to create visual impressions of the characters and environment detailed in the book. Another great benefit of using these audio books is that you don’t have to hold the book in front of you to explore its pages. This means that you can be “reading” while flying in an airplane, driving in a car, or washing dishes in your kitchen!
One thing you have to consider when choosing books on tape is which type of recording is best suited to your life. Older audio books can be found on cassette tapes, usually at a discounted price. But if you don’t have a working cassette tape player in your home or car, this won’t really encourage you to listen to the book. There are books recorded on compact discs, which are easy to travel with and more versatile when dealing with today’s technology.
If you want to be on the cutting edge of books on tape, you can look for recordings that can be downloaded to your iPod or MP3 player directly off of the internet. This eliminates waste and carbon emissions because it can be enjoyed without packaging or shipping and handling. These books are always available, and you can refresh your reading list anytime you’re near a computer and an internet connection. If you’ve never enjoyed audio books before, you might start with a work of fiction that will be sure to captivate your attention. Then, when you’re used to listening instead of reading, you’ll be able to move on to non-fiction.
